Character Sketches

Hi all. The Handyman’s Curse is ready to go to the editor. My editor asks for character sketches. I’ll admit I don’t create character sketches as I write. Who needs them, right? Surely, as the creator of my characters, I will remember everyone’s eye color, hair color, height, weight, etc. Yeah, as I work on the third book, all that information is a blur. I can’t remember half of it.

But thanks to my editor’s insistence on my creating character sketches, I now have a short document I can refer to. Yay!

Lots of folks have different ideas on what goes into a character sketch. The one I use is pretty simple. It contains the following items:

  • Birthday

  • Hair/Eyes

  • Height/Weight

  • Job

  • Car

  • Education

  • Home

  • Business

  • Likes to Wear

  • Like to Eat

  • Listens To

  • Family

  • Relationships

  • Fears

  • Hopes

  • Regrets

  • Perks

  • Pets

And that’s it. I’d be interested to hear what other people do. :)
